Safety Incidents with Hoverboards
Credit: smh

Self-balancing scooters also known as hoverboards may have gained short-lived popularity due to reports of short-circuited batteries, explosion, and related fire hazards. As a result, several major airlines announced a ban on hoverboards over fire concerns. Likewise, government bodies and municipal organisations have made moves to ban them in public places. Many cities in UK banned them from being used along roads and walkways. Likewise, in January 2016, the Consumer Product Safety Commission of United States (CPSC)  was actively investigating the safety of hoverboards due to a number of fire incidents.

However, with all these shortcomings, hoverboards have become a common sight in the celebrity arena - and recently they have also become a popular gadget for everyday consumers. It's not hard to see why. Aside from the modified design and flashing lights of the casing, hoverboards offer some practical uses. If you are looking for a simple, cheap and quick way to get around urban areas, something like a hoverboard could be just what you need.

What are the Risks Posed by Hoverboards?

The major risk associated with these devices stems from their lithium-ion batteries. In 2015, many cases of spontaneously igniting batteries were reported, leading to lawsuits across the United States. By January 2016, 40 fires had been associated with hoverboards, spread all across the country.

In most cases, the fires started during charging, often in the owner's home - posing risks to family members. However, boards were also found to ignite while using them or even when they were inactive.

In most cases, the fires started during charging, often in the owner's home - posing risks to family members. However, boards were also found to ignite while using them or even when they were inactive.

Some retailers and manufacturers have attributed the ignitions to "overcharging" their devices. If you own a hoverboard, it is definitely not a good idea to leave them charging overnight, but as many of the chargers don't automatically cut out, it will always be difficult to know when they are fully charged

The lithium-ion batteries used in hoverboards have been highlighted as the major fire risk, which is not a surprise, as these batteries include a highly flammable fluid as a key component. Any time the battery short circuits, this liquid is at risk of igniting - making it an important safe element that manufacturers should consider and improve its level of safety.

Have Hoverboards Been Assessed by Reputable Safety Organizations?

Given the unacceptable fire hazard presented by the batteries of these boards, you would think that retailers would have reached out to safety assessors like Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to make sure that every model of hoverboard meets a minimum requirement of safety.

However, this is far from being the case. While many components of popular boards have been tested by UL, the hoverboards themselves have not been put through safety assessments. So we don't know for sure whether the products are safe.

There is still a possibility that hoverboards will be banned by Federal agencies, until they are proven to be safe for everyday use. That's the case in the UK, which has seized thousands of boards due to safety worries.

How to Handle Your Hoverboard as Safely as Possible

If you have purchased a hoverboard that complies with the UL 2272 certification, don't worry. It is very unlikely to explode, but taking some simple safety measures is advisable.

  • Never leave your board unattended while it is charging and certainly don't charge it overnight.
  • Check that your board has been packaged with the name and address of the manufacturer, so that their products can be traced.
  • Ensure that a cut-off switch has been included, so that charging will automatically cut-out.
  • If you come across ultra-cheap hoverboards online or in the stores - resist the temptation to secure a great deal.
  • Always look for a UL 2272 certification on any new hoverboard purchases

Remember, with vigilance and common sense, your hoverboard can still be a fun gadget to use, although knowing the safety dangers is important. If you notice any over-heating, or you have concerns about the charger, just don't take the risk.

In addition, apart from being worried about fire risk, there are other safety concerns to be aware of. These includes: traffic incidents, the minimum and maximum weights limits and also the possibility of falling off and get yourself injured.

Now You May Ask - Which Hoverboard Should I Buy?

Like every other costumer, I am sure at this point you might be wondering “where can I buy one?” In addition, with all these safety concerns, it’s even more difficult for you to decide where to buy a premium quality hoverboard.

Nonetheless, I understand the feeling and I will happily say you can easily buy a UL 2272 certified hoverboard directly from the websites of premium manufacturers or buy premium recommended brands  from an Amazon website.

Please note that the most important factor to consider before you buy a hoverboard is the UL 2272 certification.

Also, it is important to note that virtually all hoverboards within the range of 200 USD to 500 USD are built in only one battery, while the more luxurious models are built with two batteries. However, this difference in battery does not normally imply in a significant disparity in battery life or charging times, but has been suggested to affect the stabilization of the boards. As a result, the brands with double batteries are much more balanced than the models with only one battery.

How much do I have to pay?

We most often associate high cost with quality, even though this might not be true in all cases, but I would politely say it is true for most cases. Thus, arguably, one could say the cost is definitely one way to tell whether a brand is top quality. Some of the most rated boards are associated with celebrity status and could range upwards $1,000. Similarly, top quality boards without celebrity reputations could be bought for $300 upwards. However, there is no fixed or standard price yet, but be ready to spend at least $300 for a quality board.
